Preparing for the Upcoming Cold Snap

January 25

Hi fellow chicken keepers,

With the cold snap on its way, I’ve had many of you reach out with concerns about your flocks. I wanted to reassure you that if you purchased chickens from Cedar Crest Farm, you already have cold-hardy breeds that have been raised in this environment for generations. These breeds are well-adapted to endure cold weather, so with a little preparation, your flock should be just fine.

That said, there are a few things you can do to keep your birds comfortable during the cold:

  • Add Straw or Bedding: A fresh layer of straw or shavings in the coop will help insulate and keep your flock cozy.
  • Seal Drafts: Ensure there are no drafts in the coop while still allowing for proper ventilation to prevent moisture buildup.
  • Warm Water: Provide your flock with warm, fresh water to prevent freezing and encourage hydration.
  • Mash or Warm Treats: A mash made with chick starter or warm oatmeal can give them an energy boost during cold spells.
  • Special Care for Vulnerable Birds: Keep an eye on older hens and roosters with large combs or wattles (like Faverolles or other ornamental breeds), as they can be more susceptible to frostbite. If needed, move these birds to a more protected area temporarily.

While it’s tempting to add heat lamps or extra heaters, they’re usually unnecessary for cold-hardy breeds and can even pose a fire hazard. As long as your birds are healthy and have a dry, draft-free space, they’ll puff up their feathers and keep themselves warm naturally.

Stay warm out there, and feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns! Your flocks are tougher than they look!

Happy Chicken Keeping
